Freedom Imaginaries is a non-profit organisation that uses human rights law to tackle legacies of colonialism and enslavement and contemporary forms of oppression. We work to replace these legacies with freedom imaginaries—the legal, economic, social, and political structures and ideas that create pathways to a truly post-colonial world.

MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH

STRATEGIC HUMAN RIGHTS LITIGATION & ADVOCACY

We use domestic and international justice mechanisms to expose the human rights and environmental impacts of colonial legacies, seek redress, and advance systemic change.

RESEARCH

We collaborate across disciplines to produce research on how colonial legacies impact nature and the rights of formerly colonized nations and racialized communities.

MOVEMENT BUILDING

We collaborate across social movements and build connections that support the exchange of visions and strategies for creating pathways to a post-colonial world.

COMMUNITY LEGAL EMPOWERMENT

Our community legal empowerment work strives to empower marginalized individuals and communities to know, use, and shape the laws that affect their lives.

REIMAGINING HUMAN RIGHTS

We are reimagining human rights in the Caribbean as a tool for decolonising harmful laws and practices, advancing transformative change, and building pathways to a more just future in which all people can thrive in equal dignity and harmony with nature. Our focus is on allying human rights with grassroots struggles and multidisciplinary actors to imagine and build a more just future.

CARIBBEAN CLIMATE & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE HUB

The Caribbean Climate and Environmental Justice Hub seeks to accelerate rights-based, decolonial approaches to climate and environmental injustice in the region, with a focus on sacrifice zones. The Hub's work is normatively grounded in the RRED Framework (Framework for Rights-based Reparatory Environmental Democracy) - a set of rights-based tools and methodologies for recognising, repairing, and transforming sacrifice zones.

CARIBBEAN REFUGEE LAW HUB

The Caribbean Refugee Law Hub promotes refugee law and advances the rights of refugees and other vulnerable migrants in the Caribbean through strategic human rights litigation, policy advocacy, and capacity building activities. Our #WithHaitianRefugees campaign calls on CARICOM Member States to adopt a rights-based regional framework for the protection of Haitian refugees and asylum seekers in the Caribbean.
