Freedom Imaginaries envisions a truly post-colonial world in which all people thrive in equal dignity and in harmony with nature.
OUR MISSION
We leverage the power of human rights and movement building strategies to tackle legacies of colonialism and enslavement and contemporary forms of oppression. We work to replace these legacies with freedom imaginaries—the legal, social, political and economic structures and ideas that create pathways to a truly post-colonial world.
HOW WE WORK
We apply a rights-based, earth-centered approach to confronting legacies of colonialism and enslavement and contemporary forms of oppression. This means that we assess the impacts of these legacies on human rights and the environment, promote reparations and accountability, and make the case for structures that create pathways to a truly post-colonial future in which rights can be fully achieved. This also means that we prioritize the perspectives of the most marginalized and vulnerable people, bearing in mind the unique challenges faced by those who experience intersecting forms of subordination. Importantly, our earth-centered approach means that we promote a non-anthropocentric paradigm in which the fundamental basis for right and wrong action is grounded not solely in human concerns, but in recognition of nature as a holder of rights.
MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH
The complexity of legacies of colonialism and enslavement requires multi-pronged strategies geared towards advancing systemic change. We therefore combine rights-based legal advocacy and litigation with action research and cross-movement collaboration to achieve our mission. Importantly, we believe that structural change must involve the actions and practices of ordinary people in the most intimate of spaces. We therefore use innovative communications, storytelling and visual arts to meet audiences where they are and to inspire action for a better world.
