The purpose of this side event is to share Caribbean experiences on the links between colonialism, extractivism, and the proliferation of “sacrifice zones”—places rendered dangerous and even uninhabitable due to environmental degradation, including climate change. As noted by the former UN expert on racism, these sacrifice zones are in effect “racial sacrifice zones,” since they are concentrated in territories belonging to groups and nations that were colonially designated as racially inferior. Panelists will discuss rights-based strategies to eradicate racial sacrifice zones as part of the movement for reparations, focusing on the human rights framework for racial justice and environmental protection. The event will feature the launch of Freedom Imaginaries' short film on racial sacrifice zones.
