This staging of the Caribbean Dialogues will address the protection of environmental rights defenders as one of the core elements of the RRED Framework. \nEnvironmental rights defenders play a critical role in protecting the environment and taking action against the systems and practices that lead to the creation of sacrifice zones. It is therefore crucial to acknowledge and amplify their efforts through recognizing their rights and promoting a safe and enabling environment for them to do their work. Yet\, around the world\, environmental rights defenders face significant obstacles\, challenges\, threats\, and sometimes even death\, on account of their work. This situation is exacerbated by the systematic exclusion of environmental rights defenders from participation in environmental decision-making processes\, access to environmental information\, and access to justice in cases of harm. \nThis event will bring together environmental rights defenders from the Caribbean to discuss their work in the region’s sacrifice zones and the specific risks and challenges they face. This event will also discuss human rights standards for the protection of environmental rights defenders\, with a focus on the Escazú Agreement – the first legally binding instrument in the world to include provisions on environmental rights defenders and the first environmental agreement adopted in Latin America and the Caribbean. This discussion coincides with the Second Annual Forum on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean\, which will take place 26-28 September 2023\, in Panama. \n  \nSpeakers \n\nImmaculata Casimero\, South Rupununi District Council\, Guyana\nEmily DeCou\, Amplify Caribbean\, Cayman\nJackie Frank\, Save Barbuda\, Barbuda\nKestonard Gordon\, Friends of the Rio Cobre\, Jamaica\nAkilah Jaramogi\, Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project\, Trinidad and Tobago\nPierre Louis\, Tet Kole\, Haiti\nSimone Mangal-Joly\, Citizen advocate\, Guyana\nTheresa Rodriguez-Moodie\, Jamaica Environment Trust\, Jamaica\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”REGISTER” shape=”square” color=”black” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2FWN_IXZvGLJ8QzGZ_s3yAISr6g%23%2Fregistration|||”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Beyond Extractivism: Decolonial Perspectives from the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”5200″ img_size=”full”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”RSVP” style=”outline-custom” outline_custom_color=”#666666″ outline_custom_hover_background=”#666666″ outline_custom_hover_text=”#ffffff” shape=”square” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fwebinar%2Fregister%2FWN_mswNcFo7S4KkTZBG3sci6A|||”][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text el_class=”Body_text”] \n\nExtraction in the Caribbean is rooted in the racially discriminatory history of colonial extractivism\, built on ecocide\, indigenous dispossession\, and the exploitation of non-“white” labour. Within this dynamic\, Caribbean nations have been relegated to sacrificial zones of extraction\, where they remain trapped in a vicious cycle of debt\, dependency\, and environmental degradation. Today\, the cumulative impact of centuries of colonial and contemporary extractivism presents an existential threat to the Caribbean\, including through climate crisis\, the destruction of crucial ecosystems\, biodiversity loss\, and the devastation of traditional livelihoods. \nDespite this context\, Caribbean governments and global governance institutions continue to push extractivist development as the seemingly inevitable fate for post-colonial societies. There is an urgent need for discourse and action that challenge this doctrine of inevitability and advance alternative paradigms for post-colonial development. \nIn this webinar\, panelists will analyse the concept of extractivism from a decolonial perspective\, focusing on the extractivist logics\, practices\, world views\, and normative beliefs that permit the consistent exploitation and devastation of formerly colonised nations\, including those in the Caribbean. The discussion will provide multidisciplinary perspectives on the need to build pathways to a future beyond extractivism. \nThis webinar forms part of Freedom Imaginaries’ webinar and written reflections series\, Beyond Extractivism. This webinar is also a special event in the Global Extraction Film Festival 2021 organised by Esther Figueroa (Vagabond Media) and Emiel Martens (Caribbean Creativity).[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space
